London authorities are launching a new campaign to clear water canals and river banks in East London for the approaching 2012 Olympic Games. Major Johnson and water minister Benyon initiated The ‘Big Waterways Clean Up 2012 on February 8th. As late as July 2012, when the Olympics are about to start, about 50 canals throughout London should be cleaned up.
Thames21 is the environmental charity organization leading an affiliated campaign for implementing massive weed removal. More than 30km along East London river banks are going to be cleaned by over 4,000 London citizens voluntarily involved in the project.
There will be more green clean event coming up, according to the major. Plans for clean-up events gained the support of popular public figures.
Mr Hunter, as the campaign ambassador, urges Londoners to get involved in the campaign by stating : “the rivers of London are what first inspired me to take up rowing and are now obviously a huge part of my life.” Big Waterways Clean Up is one of the top priority events in London, as waterways are a main asset of the city.
